Cotton hand embroidery and acrylic ink on found fabric placemat; 285mm x 350mm

Artist Statement

“I am very annoyed.”

This self-portrait is based on a recent incident in which I misinterpreted a text message from a friend. She wasn’t actually annoyed at me, but I so fully absorbed that interpretation, that it took quite some time before I could truly believe that she wasn’t.

Covid isolation and stress make us all a bit extra sensitive, crabby and distracted at times. Our reduced ability to concentrate on what we're putting out and receiving, plus the added limitations and ambiguities of online exchanges, make for the perfect storm of miscommunication.
