Artist Statement

This piece came about after the passing of Bill Hammond. His work is so full of loss, mourning, and fantastical hybrid beings; it seemed fitting to me to explore ideas of mortality and transcendence with one of my own.

The background was created by collaging together many, many small pieces cut from a length of furnishing fabric, which originally featured 18th century- style European figures in a pastoral setting. These snippets were rearranged to form a landscape more reminiscent of Aotearoa New Zealand, replete with pōhutukawa, pukanui and volcanic apocalypse.
