Portals Series 2022-2024

Artist Statement
This dream-like series explores states of transition. A swirling current enmeshes the central figure, drawing her towards a mysterious, gravityless void.
The works incorporate ink painting and intricately layered hand embroidery, made up of many crisscrossing threads following individual paths. Viewed from different angles, the works reveal the subtle use of relief. Portal and Portal II feature recessed areas, with light-absorbing black velvet giving the illusion of infinite space beyond.
The original inspiration for this series was the penultimate episode of animated TV series Bojack Horseman, “The View From Halfway Down”. This void in my version is not quite as sinister; it allows the characters more agency. Partway through making these works, I also started reading Kurangaituku by Whiti Hereaka. Her depiction of the other-worldly resonated powerfully with what I was trying to explore.
